Small, rear-drive cars that don’t cost a mint are becoming a dead language. No more Nissan 240SX, no more rear-drive Corolla, no more Pontiac Solstice. Camaro? Dead as well. And have you priced a BMW lately?

We’re kind of left with a two-car battle in the space: Mazda with the now decade-old ND-chassis MX-5 and Toyota and …

It’s nice to have an actual choice at that price point.  The stopwatch provides a clear winner, but personal preference tugs equally hard.

Wildcard:  not lightweight, bigger footprint, completely different set up, but at the same price point, lives the Hyundai Elantra N.

And maybe a stripped GTi.  Maybe.

The choices are few for under 40K, but good.

In reply to Coniglio Rampante :

I'd agree that the Elantra N is worth keeping on your radar if you're in the market for a Miata/BRZ/GR86.

In the end, as J.G. said, we're really the winners in this comparison.

The article intro omitted, and soon to be refreshed for 2027, base Nissan Z starts within just $5k of the BRZ tS... Now that would be a novel and interesting comparison.

For track days I don't care about the lap times and so I'd take the Miata every time.

I like the BRZ, I just enjoy Miatas more.

If I was cracking my wallet for a sporty car these days, an Elantra N would be near or at the top of the list. But it's FWD, so not really a valid comparison for the scope of this story.

Just went to check local dealer stock on Elantra Ns. There's a bunch. Then checked my bank balance. Guess there's still going to be a bunch for a while. Still a great deal, though.

I went '23 BRZ, just because I wanted a bit more space and less wind/road noise when I do drive it.

Not really pertinent to the article's strict parameters, but I can't help but notice how high the MX-5 appears (I'm sure it's because my own MX-5 has FM lowering springs).

I'm sure you could play, "Yeah, but what if..." all day, but, of my many past cars, several felt like, "I'll keep this one forever", but I really feel that the most with my MX-5.  It's near perfect for me.

That's a huge tire compound difference between the two. PS4S vs the awful S001's. Would love to see these cars compared on the same tires and a proper alignment.

Also a related correction: the Miata come stock with 205's. S001's don't even exist in 215.

I'm sure glad these both exist. I cross-shopped them but ultimately went Miata again due my Subaru engine prejudice. Also in this price category I'd argue is (was) 6th gen Camaro non-SS manuals, which all came stock with LSD.

Acknowledged.  That’s why I used the word “wildcard” and made a short list of why it doesn’t fit within the scope of the article.  The N fits within the price point, but not within the world of lightweight rwd cars.

Sorry if I wasn’t more clear about that.

Does a Mustang fit in the picture? Is 3,588 lbs. considered lightweight these days?
