If you’ve spent any significant time in motorsports in North America, you know Hoosier Racing Tire. And while the majority of the company’s business revolves around circle track racing, it has been a force in amateur road racing and autocross for decades.

Up until last year’s launch of the TrackAttack Pro–a streetable 200tw track day tire–its primary applicable products have …

Thank you, Andy! Another interesting tire test to help us decide how to deplete our tire fund.

Did Hoosier share any background on why they shrunk the tread width on the x8 tires? Did you notice any extra sidewall clearance, or is the reduction solely on the tread surface itself?

I do not believe they actually shrunk.  Those numbers are from Tire Rack, who does the measuring.  Hoosier has their own method to measure tread width but they have not published those specs yet for the new tires.

In fact, I'm pretty certain there is no shrinkage because they are made from the same molds, albeit with a different sidewall insert for all the new TrackAttack verbiage.

Thanks for this article!  This is the first direct time comparisons I've seen between them, and the results are a little surprising to me.  I'd been hearing wild stories of a second or more per lap faster times on the A/R8 vs A/R7 and that doesn't seem to be borne out.

It's unfortunate you couldn't get a set of R7s to compare them directly.  The only previous R7 test I've seen you write is the one vs the A055 and Eagle RS -- is that right, or did I miss one?

I've run a lot of sets of R7s on my M3 in NASA ST4, and am trying to figure out the best tires for 2026.  NASA slapped a -1.0 modifier on the R8 in ST4, and it would have needed to be truly epic to justify the roughly 65 hp difference vs a TAP.

That is correct, both on the CRX and the ND.  In the latter, where physical size was accounted for, the A055 was essentially equal to the R7.  So that's a good reference.

I do have a set of A055's and the Pirelli Trofeo Track sitting here to compare to the R8 for a future "part 2".  That will give us a better read on where R8 stands compared to the others.

That test will occur in about a month, as Pirelli are adamant about a 72+ degree weather condition -- and they are sending a technician to "help".

PS: If you do hear of any reasonably scientifc comparos new vs old, I'm all ears.  It's quite possible that A8 shines brighter on a higher horsepower car where early corner exit power-up is key.

Would you accept higher horsepower and higher weight?

Much disappoint. I shall try to find A7s since my club doesn’t do run groups for autocross.

So Andy, out of all of the R-comps you’ve driven on which one was the most fun? (R7, Eagle RS, A055, etc)

 as always, great read!

I prefer the handling characteristics of the A055 — it’s a fantastic dance partner.

But for that one shining lap, it’s hard to argue with the “Hand of God” grip of the A7.
