What if you just want to go as fast as possible yet still safely drive your car to and from the track? No rules, just max performance? No pesky 200tw limits either? Streetable Track Day tires are your jam.

Unlike their quasi-street-legal R-comp brethren, these tires have sufficient puncture resistance in the carcass and the tread depth to be OE fitments …

Sonic didn’t quite deliver the result I was hoping for. I suspect a significant part of this is due to the increased tread depth and substantially higher weight, but the results are the results.

The recommendation I’ve already passed up the chain is that Sonic should move forward in the U.S. with more conservative expectations, unless the later full-scale production version shows meaningful improvement.

It’s also important to clarify that true volume production for Sonic has not yet begun. A limited batch of the first few sizes has been produced and is currently on the way to establish availability, but the quantities are in my opinion inadequate.

I’ve been pushing on this point, fully expecting a rapid sell-out before additional production can be completed and dispatched; however, there simply wasn’t enough of some particularly specific raw material available to produce more. Perhaps this is a blessing and not a curse.

Given the current situation, my focus is on pushing for improvements to the tire before committing to further production volume. I don’t yet know what changes, if any, will be made, but I’m not satisfied with the current result and I don’t expect the big boss will be either.

For what it’s worth, the first feedback from the big boss was as follows:

By March 2026, Sonic will have a new and final version, targeted to be approximately one second faster than the current iteration, with key materials arriving in January.

Smaller sizes are not well suited to Sonic, there was reluctance to even produce 17-inch sizes; Sonic performs better with more power.

Based on internal testing of the 315/30R18, a more positive external result was expected.

To be continued...?

Pedantic nit pick, 7/32s is 40% more than 5/32s not 20%.

It'll be interesting to see how these run on my m3 when I get around to testing them. More weight and more power!

5-8 lbs more weight in the absolute worst place possible. I'd expect that to cost at least a few tenths per min. You can definitely feel it. We pay a lot more for wheels that are lighter. Most have probably seen this but here's a Tyre Reviews vid on wheel weight, tires will be even worse as the weight is further from the center of the wheel.

To follow up on my earlier comment: we’ve already tested the P1 P-01R against Sonic (obviously, and multiple times), and in that testing the Sonic in 315/30R18 was clearly faster than the 345/30R18 P1 P-01R on all four on a C6Z, that's nothing to say about a direct 315-to-315 comparison.

We’ll be testing again in mid-January using the initial production stock to see how the results shake out.

I've been rather impressed with the P1s I'm running on my C7Z and want to start considering Vitour tires for my next application.

At some point next year I'm hoping to get my track-only turbo NB Miata turning wheels in anger. I'm aiming for about 350whp, 2k pounds, and will be running 15s. Do you have an idea of what offering from your catalog might be the best fit here?

I’m looking forward to testing the Sonic on the Hammerzeit car. It’s 2900 lbs with 420hp and 285 (front) 305 (rear) tires. Should be a good match.

Between this test, and other recent tests among the usual 200tw (and below) options, I've never been more baffled. Is there really so much variance across different applications of the same tires?

Keeping my Sonic preorder as it's still the only exciting option for my 20" GT4 RS wheels... As long as they're a step up from my P1's, which I would think they must be.
