Build a race car for under $1000? You’re going to need ingenuity.

Certainly, it takes ingenuity to compete in our Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge presented by Tire Rack, powered by Autobidmaster and built by Carlyle Tools. However, some like to take it one step further by entering our sub-$1000 class.

Impossible, you say, to build a race car for less than a grand? Not so, as others have proven before, and Michael Crawford, aka Dusterbd13 on our forum, is the latest to accept the tougher challenge, entering his Fiesta ST. How can you reach that level of extreme frugality? Ingenuity, of course–and recouping costs.

Per the rules, “Up to $2000 may be recouped by selling parts originally included with or attached to the Challenge car, related parts car(s), or related parts packages at the time of purchase.” That’s still no easy feat, however, though we’re eager to see Crawford’s Fiesta, live and in person, when our $2000 Challenge descends upon Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida, April 18-19.

Michael will put his penny-pinching abilities to the test at the $2000 Challenge in three contests: autocross, drag racing and a concours-style judged show. (Cars built or bought for more than $2000 are welcome to compete, too, in the autocross and drag racing sessions.)

Sign up to compete in the $2000 Challenge today to secure your spot, and keep an eye on the $2000 Challenge website for future updates.

The Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge is presented by Tire Rack, powered by Autobidmaster and built by Carlyle Tools, in Association with CRC Industries, Knight's Automotive and BendPak.
