Thanks for the trip down memory lane.  This article, along with the concurrent one about the Firehawk series by Randy (https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/randy-pobst-the-way-we-raced/), are making me feel the pull of nostalgia this morning.

It also reminded me that the New Beetle RSi (VR6, AWD, wheels, brakes, suspension, body kit, etc., from the factory) should be eligible for importing in 2026.cool

I spent a lot of time racing these and the RSi in Gran Turismo 3 growing up. An RSi has a permanent spot in my dream garage.

In reply to David S. Wallens :

This reminds me. Did GRM do an article about a Beetle that was diesel powered that someone had modded to make some incredible numbers making it an absolute street weapon?

I was at RA when they brought them in for the celebrity race. Tim Allen stuffed his in the esses if I recall. I was working at Jim Ellis VW in Chamblee at the time and got hospitality tickets for me and my brother. Those cars were way cool. The biggest complaint seemed to be the flexible fenders didn't allow for much rubbing as you'd tweak the front suspension pretty easily if you got hit.

Any idea where all those cars ended up when the series ended?

I suppose VW scrapped them, or did some eventually get sold to private owners?

Andy always gets bonus points for me. My Datsun ended up in a R&T article solely because he had fond memories of his wife's 1200.

My understanding is they were flown in from Europe for the race and then flown back. After that?

That must have been a fun, but serious series to race in.

Beetles are really cheap right now.

Just sayin'.

BTW, BRB.  Off to FBM to look at Beetles.
