Can a Mk7 GTI be made as fast as a new Civic Type R or GR Corolla?

We paid $20,000 for our project Mk7 VW GTI Sport, intending to make it as fast or faster on track than more modern counterparts. Did we succeed?

We dive into the data to see how fast our upgraded Mk7 is on track against brand-new performance cars like the Honda Civic Type R and a Toyota GR Corolla–cars with starting prices close to double what we paid for our GTI.
